Past Student Contributors – 2020

Quinn McCallum

Hi, I’m Quinn, a 3rd year student at UBC studying evolutionary biology. Previously, I graduated with a BFA in illustration from Emily Carr University. I’m a bird bander, archosaur aficionado, isopod enthusiast, and annelid admirer. I’m also fascinated by Phylogenetic trees, visual representations of how all living things are related through evolutionary history.  When not in class, I can usually be found working in the tetrapod collection of the Beaty Biodiversity Museum or playing tabletop rpgs.

You can follow me on Twitter @Quinn_McCallum or on Instagram @the_ornithomancer.

Karan Dhillon

Karan is a 4th year biology student at the University of British Columbia. He has learned a lot about invertebrates in BIOL 326. Plus now he is no longer scared to touch sea stars. In his free time, Karan enjoys watching hockey and playing video games

Oscar Ma

Oscar is a fourth-year biology student at UBC. He is extremely interested in marine animals and also an experienced diver. He loves doing scientific diving and underwater ecological surveys. In his spares time, you can usually find him underwater, filming some cool creatures or spending time with the Giant Pacific octopus 🐙!

Tanvir Khaira

I’m Tanvir, a 4th year biology major (technically 5th, whoops haha) here at the University of British Columbia. I absolutely love learning anything and everything about animals and the diversity that exists in our world. As of right now I’m definitely #TeamVertebrates with my favourite animal being the rusty spotted cat (look it up, you won’t regret it), but I’m looking to broaden my horizons and work with some invertebrate animals too!

Moira Flagstad

Moira is a 4th year student in the Marine Biology honors program at UBC, in addition to a French minor. She developed her love of the ocean while growing up in the landlocked Midwest, so is now extremely happy to finally be living close to the ocean. Her time in British Columbia has left her fascinated by all marine life, with a special place in her heart for marine invertebrates. In her spare time, Moira can be found scuba diving, volunteering at the aquarium, petting every dog along the street, and drinking lots of tea

Claire Armstrong

Claire is a fourth year oceanography and biology student obsessed with anything relating water, hence the marine focus of her degree. She has a particular love for sea stars, nudibranchs (basically like sea slugs), diatoms (tiny plant-like cells in the ocean), and marine parasites (parasites are actually very amazing organisms!). She also spends most of her time training on the UBC rowing team, just to increase her time on the water and get the chance to watch many sunrises.

Jasmyne Eastmond

Jasmyne is a fourth-year undergraduate student completing a Double Major in Biology and English Literature and pursuing a career in journalism. She is fascinated by invertebrate cognitive mechanisms and understanding the effects of environmental crisis on all aspects of life on Earth. Jasmyne’s hobbies include salt-making, going to live shows and concerts, writing, and reading!

Jess Kennedy

Jess K is a fourth year student studying Marine Biology at UBC. She is fascinated by mussels (the intertidal invertebrates, NOT those muscles). She spends her time freezing mussels and then doing a bunch of other science-y stuff to them. Turns out those little guys can survive being frozen solid! Who knew! She also enjoys drinking coffee and can do some mean latte art

Maddy Bolt

Madison Bolt is a 4th year Biology Student at UBC. She has a passion for marine vertebrate and invertebrate life and will be beginning her Honours project on pinnipeds in September 2020. You may find her scouring the intertidal zone for sea stars, limpets and macro algae on a weekend stroll.

Kyla Woo

Kyla is currently a fifth-year undergraduate student majoring in Biology at the University of British Columbia. She has an interest in various species of marine wildlife. In her free time, you can find her spending time with friends and family, playing board games, and exploring the city.

Ricky Park

Ricky is a 4th year Science student, finishing up his Bachelor’s degree at the University of British Columbia. He is interested in studying about the rapid decline in coral populations and how that will affect local marine life. He also hopes to start a collection of coral of his own in the future, preferably without any casualties. Ricky is extremely excited to work with and learn about the local marine invertebrates through his time in BIOL 326. Outside of school Ricky likes to spend his time jamming on his guitar, pulling all-nighters playing video games with friends, and spending all day laying in bed.

Miranda Andersen

Miranda is a third-year student in the Marine Biology Honours Program at UBC. For her thesis, she will be examining the biomechanical consequences of hybridization in stickleback fish, but she isn’t partial to vertebrates. She developed an interest in marine invertebrate zoology during a summer course at Bamfield Marine Science Centre and continues to practice her scientific naming of intertidal critters in Vancouver. Her favourite invertebrate is the green aggregating sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima. In her spare time, Miranda enjoys swimming, diving, and any other ocean sport you can think of!

Nicole Jung

Nicole is a third-year undergraduate student majoring in both Marine Biology and Indigenous Studies, living and studying on the lands of the Musqueam people, in an area now known as Vancouver.  Nicole has known from an early age that searching the coastline could lead her to the beauty of new tidal pool worlds.  Today, Nicole finds beauty in tiny-calm bookstores, listening to people’s stories, and – of course – finding more tidal pools!

Kai Groden-Gilchrist

Kai is a fourth year Biology student at UBC, with a particular focus on animal physiology and environmentalism. He’s previously done work investigating natural plant compounds for their efficacy as agricultural fungicides to replace harmful synthetic chemicals. In his free time he loves to do anything and everything in the beautiful outdoors that the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

Madeleine Abbott

Madeleine is currently a third year studying Biology at UBC. She was drawn to study biology she has always been fascinated with animals and nature. This interest also bleeds into her hobbies of horseback riding and hiking. She is looking forward to further study of invertebrates as she has been enthralled by their strangeness and immense diversity.

Adrianne Holland

Adrianne Holland is a fourth year marine biology student. She is passionate about ocean conservation and research and is currently completing an independent project looking at the effect of ocean acidification on sea urchins! In her spare time she loves to go diving, or visit the aquarium. Her favourite local marine animals are the enigmatic harbour seals!

Isaak Haberman

Isaak Haberman is a 5th year undergraduate in the marine biology program at UBC. He is interested in marine ecology and examining the interactions between species within marine communities. He loves Biol 326 especially because it allows for exploration of the beautiful creatures we have living in Vancouver. In his spare time he likes to do crossword puzzles, go hiking, and watch football! Go Pack Go!
