2024 Student Contributors

Shadmehr Molaei-Birgani

Hi. My name is Shadmehr and I’m a 4th year Biology Major at UBC. My goal is to delve into dentistry due to my love for health sciences and oral health. In my free time, I like to play video games, watch movies, workout, play soccer and pet my dog Nina.

Christie Chow

Hello! My name is Christie. I am a third-year Biology student at UBC. I love exploring the outdoors, birdwatching and catching insects. In my free time, I like to cook, read, play video games and spend time with my red-eared slider turtle.

Marcus Shew

Marcus is a fourth year Biology major at UBC.  As a Vancouverite, he enjoys all things outdoors in the Pacific Northwest and spends his spare time snowboarding, following hockey, and practicing jiu jitsu.  He is thrilled to further learn about marine biology and invertebrates, especially in many exciting local settings across B.C.

Sam Thorne

Sam Thorne is a 4th year undergraduate student at UBC studying biological and data sciences. After growing up in land-locked Calgary Alberta, she hurried to the west coast to delve into the world of marine biology, and what a better place to do so than UBC. Since starting her degree, she has found a particular interest in physiology and is driven to learn how to biological world works. In her spare time you can find her hiking, rock climbing, or with a book and coffee in hand.

Melanie Jackson-Rintjema

Melanie is a 4th year Biology student at UBC. She loves almost all animals (still working on loving spiders, centipedes, millipedes and scorpions). She is especially interested in animal behaviour and how animals handle problems in different ways. Melanie doesn’t have many consistent hobbies and prefers to dabble in different things. She is currently dabbling in cooking, baking, weight lifting and reading fiction. She can most often be found walking her scotch collie, Jasmine or talking to her cat, Pascal.

Lindsay Watson

Hi everyone! My name is Lindsay, and I am a 4th year Biology student. I have a particular love for birds and marine mammals but love all kinds of animals. I currently volunteer at The Wildlife Rescue Association of BC helping take care of injured and orphaned birds to assist in their release back to the wild. After my undergraduate degree, I hope to pursue a career in wildlife biology or conservation. Outside of school my interests include skiing, hiking, and spending time with family and friends. I am super excited for this course to learn more about marine invertebrates and to conduct super cool field work and experiments! Looking forward to a great term!

Christy Cheuk

Hi everyone! My name is Christy and I am a 5th year Biology student at UBC. I am interested in the anatomy and physiology of the human body and hope to seek a future career related to health care. I also love the ocean and look forward to dive into the fascinating world of invertebrates in this course. In my spare time, I love hiking, watching anime, and spending time with my dogs!

Lauren Eng

Lauren is a 4th year Biology student at UBC. She’s originally from California, but has lived in China, France, and Singapore. She hopes to pursue research in genetics or marketing for a biotech company. In her free time, she enjoys film photography, crafting, and listening to music with the car windows down.

Bianca Marginean

Bianca is a fifth-year undergraduate Biology student in the B+MM program with an academic

interest in physiology. Throughout her travels, she has been lucky to explore different marine

environments by tide pooling, snorkelling, and swimming, and wants to learn more about the

sea and its creatures! Outside of school, Bianca enjoys playing sports, reading, going to

concerts, and discovering new restaurants.

Sean Chung

Hi everyone, my name is Sean. I’m a third year student majoring in Marine Biology. I found my passion in marine biology exploring the diverse tide pools in Tofino! I also enjoy playing Viola, video games, and spending time with my cat.

Marcus Lam

Marcus is a 3rd year Biology undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia. He acquired his interest in invertebrates back in BIOL 205, and he’s back for more in BIOL 326! When he’s not studying Biology, you can find him playing volleyball, competing in Olympic Weightlifting, or trading options in the stock market!

Katey Dambrowitz

Katey is an undergraduate student at The University of British Columbia pursuing an Honours Marine Biology degree. She loves the weird and wonderful world of algae, and is relatively new to marine invertebrates- she is excited to get to know these critters and learn whatever they are willing to share! She is a life-long Girl Guide, and loves to explore outside (especially in tide pools). In her spare time, Katey can be found roller skating or listening to music.

Sierra Chanel Jensen

My name is C.J. and I’m a fourth-year Biology major hoping to find work in research in wildlife conservation. When I’m not buried in textbooks, you’ll find me outdoors, hiking and skiing our local mountains—they’re my happy place – especially in the Winter. My dogs, Summer and Winter, share my love for snow, making every adventure twice as fun.

Avery Rose

My name is Avery Rose and I’m a fourth-year marine biology student at UBC. I am currently researching the biodiversity and species discovery of parasites living within marine invertebrates in the Leander Lab at UBC for my Honours thesis project. My main interests are invertebrates and the intertidal zone, but I have done a bit of fieldwork with Olive Ridley sea turtles on the west coast of Costa Rica, which was amazing. After graduation, I plan on pursuing my Master’s degree in Australia or New Zealand studying marine coastal conservation. I can’t wait to learn more about invertebrates this term!

Jimin Kim

Hi! I’m Jimin and I am a 5th-year Biology student at UBC. I don’t have any photos of myself, so please enjoy this image of an apicomplexan parasite taken for my thesis project! In my free time, I like to dabble in many things, (yet mastering none) such as diving, skiing, gaming, sewing, swimming, reading and playing the flute!

Bella You

Hi, I’m Bella, a fourth-year student studying biology and computer science. I’m into horror movies and ballet. Excited to gain a newfound appreciation of marine invertebrates and share my journey!

Drew Bramley

Hello friends! My name is Drew Bramley and I’m a fifth-year student majoring in Combined Oceanography and Biology. Growing up near the ocean my whole life I’ve developed a strong interest for all things marine; in particular, marine invertebrates! One of my favourite activities as a kid was poking around tide pools for anemones and counting all the different coloured starfish plastered along the waterline. A particular passion of mine is playing the piano, which I began when I was 4 years old and play to this day, perfecting many tv and movie themes! If you can’t tell by the photo, I am also an avid cat person 😉

Sage Wingerchuk

Hello, I’m Sage! I’m a third year undergraduate at UBC in the marine biology program. I was born and raised in the Arizona desert, but moved to Vancouver in order to study marine science. I’ve had a passion for the ocean ever since I learned to scuba dive as a teenager. All aspects of the ocean are fascinating to me, but recently seaweeds have piqued my interest after completing a course focused on them at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. In my free time, I enjoy baking and drawing.

Jade Wong

I am a 4th year UBC biology student (with a minor in Commerce). Since elementary school, I have been drawn to learning about the natural sciences. I even spent a summer in Costa Rica studying sea turtles! When I am not studying, I spend most of my time outdoors, paddle boarding, horse riding, or playing with my puppy

Hugo Wu

Hi everyone I’m Hugo and I’m a 4th year bio student!
