Emma is a 4th year student in the Biology program at UBC. Her passion for biology stemmed from summers spent on Vancouver Island exploring the intertidal, and in recent years has become interested in animal physiology. In her free time, she can be found at the beach, hiking or reading a book.

Wendy Tso

Wendy Tso is a 4th-year undergraduate studying Biology at UBC. She was drawn to the study of animals and environmentalism and later encountered the amazing wonders of genetics and neurobiology. She has previously performed genome editing techniques on the synaptic genes of C. elegans to study neurodegenerative diseases and hopes to continue down this route in understanding the cognitive mechanisms of life on Earth. In her leisure time, she is often found playing Ultimate frisbee, editing videos, or playing the piano.

Sabrina Moore

Sabrina Moore is a 5th year biology student at UBC. Her interest in marine invertebrates started with summers spent exploring beaches and docks in the Gulf Islands. In her spare time, she likes playing guitar, watching Netflix and dancing.

Caitlin Mayo

Caitlin is a 3rd year undergraduate student in the Biology program at the University of British Columbia. Growing up on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia she became passionate about marine biology at a young age. Caitlin is interested in studying coastal marine ecology and conservation management in relation to impacts caused by climate change. In her spare time she enjoys reading a good book, baking, and spending time outdoors.

Carter Burtlake

Hi everyone! My name is Carter, and I am a fifth-year student studying Biology at the University of British Columbia. My undergraduate highlights all include time spent in the intertidal or on the ocean. Animal structure and function, physiology, ecology, and climate science are the topics which intrigue me most. My passions outside of studying coastal science include whitewater kayaking, mountaineering, and scuba or snorkeling.

Risa Ogushi

Risa is a third year biology student at UBC. She loves anything marine-related but her favourites are seaweeds, intertidal invertebrates, and Pacific spiny lumpsuckers. In her free time, you can find her reading a book, knitting/crocheting, or baking.

Meghan Camplin

Meghan is in her third year of Biology at UBC and has recently taken an interest in zoology and invertebrates. She grew up in Ontario and is so excited to be living and studying on the west coast!  When she isn’t flipping rocks during low tide, you can find her on the Fraser River training with the UBC Women’s Rowing team or painting with her mom.

Lucy Wall

Hello! I’m Lucy, a bio major super excited to spend my last term at UBC studying inverts! My main interests lie in conservation, marine biology, science communication, and visual art. Some of my very happiest places are by the ocean, driving boats, and wading in rockpools

Alex Horner

Alex Horner is a 5th year UBC student in the Biology undergraduate program. Growing up in Vancouver, he has spent much of his childhood exploring the coastal ecosystems of British Columbia. To go along with an interest in studying animal and plant physiology, he enjoys participating in a variety of sports, with particular keenness for basketball and hockey.

Ruby Burns

Hi folks! I’m Ruby, a 3rd year biology major here at UBC. I grew up in Mississauga Ontario, but as a die-hard marine biology nerd I packed up and moved to the coast at the first available opportunity – and I’ve been loving Vancouver since! When the two halves of my brain decide to take a break from arguing about whether marine invertebrates or seaweeds are cooler, I find myself crocheting, drawing, playing guitar, or getting lost in the labyrinth sometimes called Pacific Spirit Park.

Teagan Po White

Hi all! My name is Teagan Po White, and I am in my final year at UBC, majoring in biology. I love fungi and invertebrates a ton, and I am always excited to learn more about them! Exploring the intertidal and the forest is always fun, and I also like relaxing with a video game.

Emily Black

Emily is a 4th year Animal Biology student at UBC, originally from Calgary, AB. She has a passion for invertebrates and likes to use data science and machine learning to discover new things about insect ecology and evolution. In her free time, you can find her sipping coffee at Loafe café on campus, running with Callie the border collie in the forest, or playing classical piano.

Olivia Baptiste

Olivia is a 4th-year Indigenous student in the Faculty of Science studying biology at UBC. She is interested in the physiology and behaviours of animals and plants. Her hobbies include running, hiking, and volleyball!

Eden Viveiros

Eden is a 4th year Biology student at the University of British Columbia. She’s spent her time as an undergraduate collecting intertidal snails and crabs, examining vertebrate specimens, and trying not to get yelled at for having a centimeter of her ankle exposed in her organic chemistry labs. She grew up in a small town in Northern British Columbia, and any kid who grew up in a small town in Canada knows that one of the few sources of entertainment are going to be found outdoors. In her spare time, she enjoys finding secret look out points and waterfalls, going for runs in the trails around her home, looking under logs for toads and salamanders, and dumping an unfortunate amount of hours into Skyrim.

Liron Gertsman

Born and raised in Vancouver, Liron Gertsman has strong a passion for nature, science, and photography. His photographic work has been experienced by millions in some of the largest museums across the world, including the Natural History Museum in London and the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Liron is currently a 4th year Biology student at the University of British Columbia, where he continues to build upon his passion and commitment to the environment. Follow along with his adventures on social media @liron_gertsman_photography.

Hi everyone! I’m a fifth-year student at UBC studying general biology. My main interest is in human biology and health sciences but also love learning about marine ecosystems. Most of my time is spent playing on the varsity field hockey team at UBC as well as the Canadian Men’s National Team. But when I’m not studying or training I love to spend time outdoors.

Emily Moore

My name is Emily Moore, I am a student-athlete in my 5th year of Biology at UBC and I play one the Varsity Women’s ice hockey team. I am originally from a small town outside of Calgary, Alberta and have loved getting to experience the marine environments of the Vancouver coast, as well as getting to learn about the various creatures that live in them! Particularly I love Littorina Species, I did a project on them in a first year Biology lab and have loved them since! One day I hope to be a doctor or find a role in medical research in either the developmental biology or epidemiology communities. I think that intertidal invertebrates are especially fascinating and have been so grateful to get to learn about them in my time at UBC.
